Beyond the Burj: Discover the Real Community of Downtown Dubai
Imagine a place where you can wake up to views of the tallest building in the world, dive with sharks at the weekend, and catch world-class plays and performances right on your doorstep.
It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
But by living in Downtown Dubai, all of this can be your everyday reality.
Downtown is well known for attracting tourists and sightseers. However, while everyone knows about the Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa, and the Dubai Fountains, few people realise that this special and unique area offers a myriad of undiscovered experiences.
It’s the perfect community for professionals who are hoping to build their careers and live a fun yet sophisticated lifestyle that matches their aspirations.
A Hotspot for Driven Professionals
Jessi Chai lives Downtown and owns a property in Business Bay.
“When I first moved to Dubai in 2015, I was living right on the outskirts of the city in Al Khail Gate. I quickly realised that I wasn’t happy there and that I wanted to find a community where there were plenty of other people my own age and great restaurants and nightlife,” she says.
“Now, I absolutely love living in Downtown, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Its whole vibe really fits my lifestyle.”
Meanwhile, Kathleen Burbridge resides Downtown with her husband. She agrees that it has a different ambience from anywhere else in Dubai.
“Downtown is a more mature community than the Palm or Marina,” she states.
“The dining and nightlife is far more refined as well.”
Cyclist and Pedestrian-Friendly
Being positioned in the heart of one of the most rapidly developing metropolitan cities in the world, you might imagine that owning a car is compulsory in Downtown Dubai.
But that’s not the case at all!
“The government has invested so much money into the sidewalks of Downtown, Business Bay, and DIFC. You can now walk, cycle, or scoot everywhere safely,” adds Jessi.
“Everything I want is literally within a 15-to-20-minute walk. It’s a dream location.”
Plus, the Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa Metro step lets you go as far as Dubai International Airport or Expo City Dubai for just a couple of dirhams.
“I can drive, but I just choose not to,” continues Jessi.
“The traffic can be hideous, and if I plan to have a drink, I get a taxi anyway. With so many places to eat and little shops in Downtown, I prefer to stay local and scoot or walk around.”
Options for Every Budget
Ideal for those who like the finer things in life, Downtown is filled with museums, art galleries and cultural attractions, luxurious high-fashion stores, and award-winning fine-dining restaurants.
On the other end of the spectrum, there’s independent shops, quirky board game cafes, and small restaurants with patios offering enthralling views of the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Opera, and other local landmarks. If you’re looking for something unique to do on the weekend, you can even dive with sharks at the Dubai Aquarium in Dubai Mall.
“Downtown feels like the heartbeat of the city. There’s a certain energy about it,” notes Kathleen.
“Everything is super easily accessible. I can walk to Business Bay and DIFC, and the galleries and boutiques of D3 are just around the corner. It’s super convenient, and the traffic is only an issue on weekends. When I have visitors, it’s easy for them to get around and see all the best bits of Dubai.”
A Runner’s Paradise
Working a high-powered job as the creative director of a PR agency, Kathleen relishes being able to run off the day’s stresses by the Dubai canal.
She’s not alone, either. The wide canal paths and tree-lined promenades of Downtown are always filled with joggers and walkers.
Moreover, the iconic Burj2Burj Half Marathon finishes in Burj Park, and the Dubai Run, the world’s largest community fun run, concludes at Dubai Mall. This means that while other participants battle road closures and congested metros to get home, Downtown runners can simply saunter back to their front door for a shower.
During the summer months, walking the cool levels of the enormous Dubai Mall provides a pleasant way of topping up your daily step count. In fact, even just strolling along the Metro link from the mall to the station lets you rack up almost a kilometre of walking.
The Hidden Quirks of Downtown Dubai
Quirky Street Art
While everyone knows about the Dubai Fountain, few realise that Downtown Dubai is a treasure trove of striking sculptures. Ranging from giant dandelions to a three-metre-tall bronze monkey, they add a bit of culture and interest to every walk.
Bike to Kite Beach
Despite being in the heart of the city, the coastline is just a manageable bike ride away.
“One of my favourite things to do on the weekend is cycle along the cycle paths along the canal to Kite Beach,” adds Jessi.
Explore Green, Pet-friendly Spaces
Many people might not expect the skyscrapers of Downtown to surround a huge, dog-friendly park filled with green spaces, running tracks, playgrounds, and more.
Burj Park is completely free to enter, and you can hire bikes here, too.
In fact, the whole area is pet-friendly. Dogs are welcome by the canal as long as they are on a leash.
How to Navigate Downtown Like a Local
Downtown Dubai is an undeniably busy area that experiences high volumes of traffic and tourists. Jessi shares her top tips for navigating these downsides.
Choose Your Dog Walk Times Carefully
“If you have a dog, make sure you walk it early before people start setting off for work or late in the evening once everyone is back home. Rush hour is not a pleasant time to be walking along the roads.”
Plan Your Errands
“The Dubai Mall is never really quiet, but Monday to Thursday is slightly less busy than Friday and the weekends. It goes without saying that I also avoid going during public holidays.”
Discover Bay Avenue
“Found in Business Bay, Bay Avenue is just a short walk away from central Downtown. I love exploring all the small, independent fast-food restaurants there. They’re so good and so affordable! It provides a nice contrast to the more expensive restaurants of Downtown.”
Explore DIFC
“DIFC is less busy than Downtown, and it’s super close. That’s usually where I go out on the weekend. It’s also got lots of cafes that are great for remote working. It has a really inspiring, co-working feel.”
Downtown Dubai: You Think You Know It, But Wait Till You Live Here!
Many Dubai residents think that they’ve discovered all there is to see and do in Downtown. But believe us, you can’t properly know and understand this fascinating area until you’ve lived there.
Scratch beneath the surface of the tourist attractions and flashy restaurants, and you’ll find a friendly community that welcomes pet owners, cyclists, joggers, and sociable young professionals, plus so many cool and one-of-a-kind venues and experiences.
Ideal for those who want to spend their time walking or cycling rather than being stuck in traffic, owning a car is not a requirement in this well-connected area. The dream destination for those of you who relish being in the heart of the action, the nearby theatres, bars, art galleries, and sporting facilities mean that you’ll always be spoilt for choice for weekend and evening activities.
