New designs revealed for Dubai EXPO 2020

Pavilion design for three of the main pavilions that will take a major part in Dubai Expo 2020 are already chosen.

Expo 2020 Committee assigned Emaar Properties to launch and run an international architecture competition focusing on exploring ideas on three main pavilion themes, Sustainability, Mobility, Opportunity. All three themes are directly connected to the main Expo theme: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.

The winning designs were revealed yesterday by Emaar Properties chairman Mohamed Alabbar as well as the chairman of the Expo Higher Committee, Dubai Airport and Emirates airline, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

“The competition attracted a truly stellar line-up of architectural firms that each put forward designs that impressed all those involved in the selection process,“ Sheikh Ahmed said. “After careful study and consideration, three designs stood out, amid tough competition, as great future structures that will mark our Expo as exceptional.”

Each chosen design represented a certain value and concept to the main theme. The Opportunity pavlion design submitted by Bjarke Ingels Group provokes the thought of the Urban life being created and formed  from the cultural exchange, global economic trends and the evolving communication technologies. On the other hand, the Mobility Pavilion by the London-based practice Foster + Partners which created previous projects in the UAE for Investment Corporation of Dubai and Brookfield Properties’ new Brookfield Place office tower in Dubai and the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi.

Grimshaw, the eco-architecture specialist behind the UK’s Eden Centre, are behind the third winning design for the Sustainability Pavilion.

The three pavilions will surround the central Al Wasl Meeting Plaza, which will be the focal point of the 2 square kilometre Expo site and will continue to serve as landmarks and functional structures after the Expo’s end in 2021.

Mr Alabbar, Emaar Properties chairman, said that the chosen designs “further build on the UAE and Dubai’s proven record in iconic architectural design, particularly when considering their long-term functionality, sustainability and contribution to Expo 2020’s legacy and Dubai’s long-term development”

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum added that Expo 2020 would be “a festival of human ingenuity”.
