Creating an account with DEWA requires the consumer to pay a refundable deposit. This amount can be refunded when the consumer is relocating or moving out of Dubai. The process is quite simple, and here is how you can do it.

An individual, business, or government office can proceed with the refund request. DEWA, the Dubai housing fee system, has partnered up with Western Union and Emirates NBD to cater to all such requests.

Below is the procedure that has to be followed before the user can make the refund request.

  • Vacate the property registered for the DEWA account
  • Provide your new address, phone number and email address
  • Make sure you have cleared all your previous DEWA bills

The refund can be requested via the DEWA website, DEWA mobile app, DubaiNow app or the DEWA service centres.

Please note if you are shifting to a new address in Dubai, DEWA security deposit refund is not necessary. It can be moved to your new address. You can update your new address from the DEWA mobile application or through Request for Information Update.

Steps to Be Followed

Once you do all of the above, please follow the steps below to continue with the refund DEWA.

Step 1 – Clear All the Dues

Log into your DEWA ID or UAE Pass and view your electricity and water bills. Once all your dues are clear, you can apply for a refund.

Step 2 – Select the Refund Option

You can select between Western Union, IBAN or Cheque. Each of the mediums has a limit.

  • For Western Union, the amount must be between AED 20 to AED 18,000
  • With IBAN, the amount must be less than AED 200,000
  • For Cheque, the amount must be more than AED 200,000

Step 3 – Verification

Once you have selected the refund medium, you will be sent a verification code to make sure it is you. Choose the channel through which you can easily access the verification code – email address or mobile number.

For IBAN:

  1. If you choose IBAN, you will be asked to submit proof that this is your bank account. Please attach the beneficiary’s account title/name.
  2. You will receive a verification code on your email address or mobile number.
  3. Enter the verification code.
  4. You will receive a notification or an email confirming your request.

For Western Union:

  1. If you choose Western Union, you will be sent a verification code on your email address or mobile number.
  2. Enter the verification code.
  3. You will receive a notification or an email confirming your request. 
  4. It will also include a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN). You can show this MTCN at any branch of Western Union and get your refund. It remains valid for up to 30 days.

For Cheque:

  1. If you choose IBAN, you will be asked to submit proof that this is your bank account. Please attach the beneficiary’s account title/name.
  2. You will receive a verification code on your email address or mobile number.
  3. Enter the verification code.
  4. You will receive a notification or an email confirming your request.

Service Charges

The charges applied depend on the medium you choose. 

  • For IBAN, there will be no additional charges.
  • For Western Union, AED 18.37 or 1% of the total deposit amount (whichever is higher).
  • For Cheque, AED 20 + value added tax.
  • Transfer to another active DEWA account; there will be no additional charges.

Time Taken for DEWA Deposit Refund

The time taken for a deposit refund depends on the medium you choose.

  • For IBAN, three working days
  • For Western Union, three working days
  • To another active DEWA account, three working days
  • For Cheque, six working days

The user can track their refund by logging into their DEWA account and going to the “Track Refund” section on the website or the DEWA smart app.
