Learn About Plastination
Plastination is a process of preserving the human body, which was refined by a popular German anatomist in 1977. The process is designed to preserve humans and animals. At Body Museum, visitors can learn about touching and interacting with specimens without concerns of disease. However, these specimens are fragile and need to be handled carefully. Here’s how the process takes place.
Fixation and Anatomical Dissection
The arteries are filled with preservation fluids to destroy any remnant bacteria. Moreover, it stops the tissue from decomposing.
Dehydrating the Body
This is the actual start of the plastination process. The body gets dehydrated in a solvent bath, such as an acetone bath.
Forced Preservation
The specimen is then immersed in a liquid polymer such as silicon rubber. Afterwards, it is placed in a vacuum chamber. The vacuum will allow the acetone to be removed from the tissue and replaced with silicone.
Positioning
The body is then placed in the position of choice. It is fixed into place using wires, clamps, needles and foam blocks.
Curing
The last step uses light and gas to harden the specimen while it is set in position. This protects the plastinates from decomposition.
