In a small space, everything counts. To make a confining bedroom look bigger, all you need are a great bed and two nightstands. Here are five tips to help you maximise your square footage and make your bedroom feel like a spacious, calming hideaway.
Choose the right furniture
Do not crowd your space with too much furniture. Stick to key pieces – a bed and two nightstands. Make sure they are big and practical so that you do not have to add many more pieces, cluttering the room. One way to do this would be to add a large headboard to the bed. This will make the bed itself look like a statement piece and will turn it into the focal point of the room without taking up valuable floor space.
Have space-saving storage options
Use space under the bed. Use under-bed boxes, flat packs or baskets to store things that you don’t currently use or wear less often. Your bedroom will also benefit from pieces that have multiple uses. The ottoman, for example, in addition to serving as a footrest can also act as a built-in storage option for blankets, linen, magazines and books.

Choose colours wisely
Painting the walls can transform your bedroom instantly but the choice of colour is very important. Dark colours in a small room will make your bedroom feel like a cave. If you like dark shades, use them in accessories such as pillow covers, rugs and throws. Light coloured walls will open up the space; use pale blues, subtle greens, yellows, off-whites, beige or cream hues.
Let the light in
Sunlight will do wonders for your room and mood. Allowing natural light will open up the interior and make it look bigger. You could also try adding a floor-length or a wall-hanging mirror to expand the area and reflect light. Another idea is to bring in artificial light for the evening. Save space by using wall-mounted lighting instead of floor and table lamps to illuminate the room.
Use stripes to elongate the space
By orienting the stripes to parallel the longest side of the room, you can create the illusion of a bigger room.
Hang your curtains high
Mounting your window treatments higher and wider than your window frame will make your ceiling feel taller, the room feel brighter and your windows look larger than they really are.
Hang shelves near the ceiling to draw the eye upward
Hanging shelves above door openings and windows also tricks the eye into thinking the room has higher ceilings.
